Former President Jimmy Carter was about to be discharged from a hospital in Ohio after spending two days in the hospital for a viral infection that doctors said was the likely cause of an upset stomach.
Carter, 85, would leave between 12:30 and 1:30 pm Thursday (1630 and 1730 GMT), said Susan Christopher, a spokeswoman for MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland. Police cars, ambulances and SUVs were outside the hospital while television crews clustered for his departure.
Carter became ill when flying from Atlanta to Cleveland and rescue teams took him urgently to hospital as soon as the plane landed. Your medical team recommended to remain hospitalized for two nights to be monitored.
"President Carter thanked all those who have expressed concern about their health and have sent greetings", the hospital said in a statement late Wednesday.
The hospital stay Carter interrupted a tour to promote his new book, "White House Diary" ("Diary of the White House.")
The publisher canceled the acts which should assist Carter in Washington, including one at the Smithsonian Institution and had stopped public appearances Tuesday in Ohio and North Carolina. No one knew if he kept up the act scheduled for Thursday in Columbia, South Carolina.
Carter, who went from peanut farmer to governor and then president in 1976, has devoted recent years to promote peace and human rights, efforts that earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
In the new book, Carter said that in his single term over-ambitious attempt to implement policies which confused and alienated voters of Congress. But he said it cost him reelection in 1980 was the crisis of American hostages in Iran and the Democratic primary campaign of Senator Ted Kennedy.
